Preparing an Old Cabinet for Polyester
For the last 16 years, we have been enhancing old instruments with a polyester lacquer finish.
Polyester filler and lacquer require a very good base. Degreasing and isolating the sanded surface cannot always guarantee good adhesion. Another problem is the existence of loose joints in old cabinets which can cause the hard but brittle lacquer to crack. Over the years we have tried various methods of preparing cabinets for finishing, and were able to monitor the results. A later drying out, cracking or flaking of the lacquer was often caused by a superficial cabinet repair. Consequently extensive carpentry is carried out - whereby wood filler is seldom used. The repair includes straightening and adjusting all cabinet parts for an exact fit. Repairing the lyre and leg connecting boards ensure stability; the frame joints are re-glued and strengthened and the underside painted. Damaged castors, pedals and fittings are repaired or replaced.

Wood joints in old constructions are strengthened and veneered to reduce the risk of cracks in polyester lacquer.

Wrest plank tension can cause cracks at the edges. Reinforcement can prevent this.

Warping on lids first comes to notice after machine sanding. Il necessary a new lid is constructed.

Our spraying booths ensure ideal conditions for applying polyester (purity and correct air temperature). Flaws in the lacquer can be prevented.
